* OPEN CITY TOUR DETAILS
On the third Sunday of each month, unless noted otherwise, Houston Historical tours sponsors an OPEN CITY TOUR for the public from 10 AM - 4 PM. This tour has 6 stops, including the Water Wall in the Galleria area, the Beer Can House, Gargoyle House, Art Car Museum or an art car studio, David Adickes's Sculpturworx, and, from September through May, a tour of the beautiful home and gardens of Bayou Bend, one of Houston's masterpiece mansions.
During the sweltering summer months of June, July, and August we substitute 3 or 4 air-conditioned museums and or chapels for Bayou Bend with its beautiful outdoor gardens. These museums include the Rothko Chapel, The Menil Collection, the Cy Twombly Gallery, the Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum, The Contemporary Arts Museum, and or the Houston Center for Photography.
A tour also includes a panoramic identification and description of major and historical downtown structures, going to Freedmen’s Town, River Oaks, the Upper Kirby District, Rice Village, Rice University, the Museum District, Hermann Park, the Texas Medical Center (TMC), seeing the south side stadiums of the Astrodome and Reliant Park, the Galleria, Memorial Park, Rice Military District, downtown, the Theater District, the old Banking District, the Courthouse District, the downtown stadiums of Minutemaid Ballpark, and the Toyota Center, and the George R. Brown Convention Center. Narratives about the demographics, history, economy, geography, climate, and politics of Houston and Texas are provided throughout the tour. Itineraries are provided.
The cost, including lunch, is $60 per person. Parties of 4 or more persons will receive a 10% discount. Reservations and payment must be received at least by the Thursday before the tour so that an appropriate size van or bus can be reserved
