Big Bend and West Texas

Day 1: See Austin, Fredericksburg and get gas, Johnson City, the Johnson Ranch in Stonewall, lunch in Sonora, spelunk in the Caverns of Sonora, Fort Stockton, and dinner in Balmorhea. Spend the night at the motel in Balmorhea State Park.

Day 2: Breakfast in Balmorhea, swim in San Solomon Springs at the Balmorhea oasis, gift and souvenir shopping at the Ranger Station, tour Fort Davis, hike in the Davis Mountains, lunch at the Star Date Café, tour the McDonald Observatory on Mount Locke, look through the world's largest telescope, gift and souvenir shopping at the Frank N. Bash Visitors Center, drive through Alpine and get gas, check in to the Big Bend Motor Inn (BBMI), gift and souvenir shopping at the BBMI store, and the Terlingua Trading Company, and dinner at the Starlight Theatre in Terlingua. Spend the night at the BBMI.

Day 3: Breakfast and the Candelilla restaurant in Lajitas, (opens at 7 AM), tour Lajitas, horseback riding in the Chihuahuan Desert, picnic in a canyon, scenic drive along the Camino del Rio (River Road), see the Contrabando movie set, drive through Radford, tour Fort Leaton from 1683, shopping at the Big Bend Ranch State Park gift shop, shopping in Mexico, and dinner at Comales restaurant in Ojinaga, Mexico. Spend the night at the BBMI.

Day 4: Breakfast at the Kosmic Kowgirl's Kafé, all day 21-mile rafting tour on the Rio Grande and go through the Santa Elena Canyon, lunch in the canyon, and dinner at La Kiva. Spend the night at the BBMI.

Day 5: Breakfast at the Big Bend Café, gift and souvenir shopping at the Café store, enter Big Bend National Park (BBNP), hike on the 2.2 mile Grapevine Hills Trail and the 0.3 mile Window View Trail, lunch at the Chisos Canyon Lodge, gift and souvenir shopping at the Lodge store, ranger station, and the independent Basin store, hike on the 1.7 mile Santa Elena Canyon Trail and the 0.25 mile Castolon Historic Compound, and dinner at the High Sierra Bar and Grill. Spend the night at the BBMI.

Day 6: Breakfast at the Big Bend Café, gift and souvenir shopping at the Café store, and the Fina Station within BBNP, gift and souvenir shopping at the Panther's Junction Ranger Station, and the Rio Grande Village, drive to the Boquillas Canyon Overlook, hike the 1 mile Hot Springs Trail, soak in the Hot Springs, purchase sandwiches to eat on the road at the Fina Station within BBNP and by Panther Junction, drive through Sanderson and Dryden, tour Langtry and the Visitors Center, tour Del Rio, dinner at Crosby's, and gift and souvenir shopping in Ciudad Acuna. Spend the night at the Best Western Inn of Del Rio.

Day 7: Breakfast at the Best Western Inn, tour Del Rio, pass Brackettville (where John Wayne filmed "The Alamo"), drive to Uvalde, tour Uvalde, drive to San Antonio, eat lunch at La Margarita, shop for gifts and souvenirs at the Mercado, drive to Rivercenter Mall, shop for gifts and souvenirs at Rivercenter Mall, stroll along the Riverwalk, and return to Houston.
